Once upon a time…
The journey through the tumultuous landscape of an author career, searching for the oasis…
Dedicated to my wonderful author community.
Once upon a time…
you decide to become an author,
write books that people will rave about,
and become the talk of the town,
in your head, there’s absolutely no doubt.
Once upon a time…
an idea strikes so bright,
full of hope and poignant delight,
you begin jotting down, stringing words together,
you know you are onto something,
dreams burn brighter as you pour your heart and untether.
Once upon a time…
you are halfway into the draft,
much time has passed, since you stepped on this road,
but the end is no where in sight,
your determination wavers and shatters, but you still haven’t anything to goad.
Once upon a time…
the urge to have your words printed, still remains,
although not as it once was.
you flap around in the murky waters, hoping to find the spark again,
you dedicate a discourse to punctuation— comma, semicolon, and em-dash.
Once upon a time…
you find the light at the end of the tunnel,
Hip hip hooray, you jump ecstatic,
but it’s not over yet,
the path ahead, the choices, you are scared to take a pick.
Once upon a time…
you close your eyes and jump right in,
much too close to turn around now,
stabs at your heart are now a regular thing,
you sulk and cry, but your manuscript has never been better, so you continue to plow.
Once upon a time…
finally a professional likes your book too,
tears sting your eyes, happy tears,
you are overwhelmed, you are elated,
you ignore the warnings of your peers.
Once upon a time…
your book is out in the whole wide world,
but the release is nothing like you hoped for,
you yell into the social media void, but nothing sticks,
you close the doors and windows, in you shutter.
Once upon a time…
when you come up for air next,
a satisfaction lays upon you,
you are a published author after all,
and there’s hope in your heart anew.
Once upon a time…
the publishing wringer looks appealing again,
how, you have no idea,
but the brain is an elusive thing,
creativity blossom like a bud of azalea.
On you go, butt in chair again,
No care in the world or for the neck and back pain.
